Tips To Get Healthy This Year

It's that time of year again! New Year's resolutions are in full swing, and many people are vowing to get healthy in 2023. The New Year brings many exciting and positive changes for most everyone. It’s a time to reset, recharge, and refocus in all areas of life. Perhaps the most popular goal setting is with your health.

Most health goals begin with a number on the scale. Or the size of your clothes. And while these goals can boost motivation and a focused milestone, they’re usually the goals people hit and don’t maintain, or never even reach to begin with.

But getting healthy doesn't have to be a daunting task. There are small changes you can make in your everyday life that will lead to big results. Keep reading for tips on how to get healthy and stick to your goals this year!

Set realistic goals for yourself -

(don't try to do too much at once)

For anyone looking to get healthy, goal-setting is a critical aspect of the process. It's important to set realistic goals that are achievable and won't overwhelm or stress you out. Trying to do too much at once can add additional pressure and bring down your overall motivation. Instead, break up your larger goal into smaller, more manageable pieces, and make sure that you recognize even the small successes along the way.

Taking on an entire lifestyle change all at once can be difficult, but by setting short-term attainable goals, you'll get closer to reaching your long-term objective in a more structured manner.

Find an activity that you enjoy -

(and stick with it)

Exercise may get a bad rap for being too difficult or time consuming, but with the right approach it can be both fun and beneficial to your overall health. Finding an activity that you enjoy is often key in sticking with it. Whether it be running, biking, hiking, or small activities like yoga, pilates or tai chi, there are many options available to get healthy and have a good time doing it. Having fun during your exercise routine will make it much easier to stay motivated and ensure that you get into the best shape of your life!

Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive -

(focus on simple, whole foods)

Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive and complicated; in fact, focusing on simple, whole foods is a great way for anyone to get healthy. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables can provide an abundance of nutrients that are integral for overall health. Adding some lean proteins and complex carbohydrates like oats and quinoa can provide essential energy throughout the day.

With a few basic items from the grocery store, you can make nutritious meals without breaking the bank. Following a program, such as the Quicksilver Scientific 30 Day Reset can help you with meal plans, shopping lists, recipes as well as the right supplements to keep you on track and focused. Incorporating a few simple guidelines while shopping can help you get the most out of your food budget while also getting healthier as you go!

Drink plenty of water -

(and avoid sugary drinks)

Staying hydrated is a key part of getting healthy, and the healthier way to get your daily dose of water is to drink it plain. Drinking plenty of plain water throughout the day ensures your body stays fueled and able to get through its routine. Remember, sugary drinks like soda or energy drinks contain empty calories without providing any real nutrition – so be sure to avoid these and get your water fix instead!

Drinking more water will not only help keep you energized but can also reduce the intake of unhealthy food cravings. Start today by replacing a few sugary drinks with an extra glass of water and get on your way to a healthier you!

Get enough sleep!

(7-8 hours per night is ideal)

Sleep is an important part of our daily routine and plays a pivotal role in our overall well-being. Aiming for 7-8 hours of quality sleep every night gives us energy, strengthens our immune system and helps with focus, concentration and alertness during the day.

Additionally, getting enough sleep improves cognitive functioning, supports memory formation and makes it easier to manage emotions like anxiety or depression. So if you really want to stay healthy and productive, make sure you get your desired 8 hours each night!

Tips For Achieving Your Get Healthy Goals

Make time for relaxation and stress relief -

Get Healthy

(EVERY DAY)

As we navigate daily life and the various stressors that come with it, it is important that we make time for relaxation and stress relief every day. Taking even just a few moments out of our day to practice mindful breathing exercises or any other form of relaxation can really help us stay grounded and manage any overwhelming emotions.

Setting aside a designated chunk of time each day as our “me-time”, makes relaxation more habitual and will ultimately lead to increased feelings of wellbeing. And if you have difficulty carving out that time each day, enlisting the support of others, such as family members or friends can be extremely helpful in making official commitments to your mental health, allowing you to be kinder to yourself going forward.

Did you know that most New Year’s resolutions are dropped by February? That means for 1/12 months are focused on your New Year goals, and the other 11 months are spent feeling like you’ve failed yourself.

This way of thinking can be detrimental to your self esteem and success in the future. That’s why it’s important to change the narrative, redefine the goal, so that you are successful and make positive, lasting changes. Here are 4 ways you can improve your goal setting for 2023:

  1. Make a Vision Board - Setting aside time to get really focused on your goals for the year can really help you be more successful in the coming year. Creating a vision board with outlined goals, dreams, and aspirations tied to a collage of images can really help you stay focused and work toward those goals. (check out this step by step guide and use this Canva template to help you create a vision board).
  2. Be specific when outlining your goals. When you list a goal too broadly, it makes it impossible to achieve it. For example, setting a goal to be healthier in the New Year isn’t a goal. You have to define when “be healthier” means. List every detail of what “be healthier” means to you (i.e. lose 10 pounds, exercise 4 days/week, start a daily vitamin regimen, limit red meat, follow a holistic health plan).
  3. Make your goals about creating a new habit, or breaking an old one. A goal to lose 10 pounds is not a real goal. Your goal could be to “be healthier” and part of that goal is to lose 10 pounds because that will help you “be healthier”. If your goal is simply to lose 10 pounds, it’s doubtful you’ll achieve it or maintain it since there aren’t specific parameters around how you’ll achieve it.
  4. Know your WHY. Why are you setting this goal for yourself? Without the WHY or the reason behind the goal, you're less likely to achieve it. A goal has to have purpose or a WHY behind it. For your goal to “be healthier” the why might be so that you can live longer to attend your grandchildren’s wedding, or so that you can avoid chronic disease, or so that you can have more endurance, etc.
  5. The final tip is to break down your goals into bite-sized chunks. Having a goal to achieve your resolutions by December 31, 2023 is a sure-fire way to NOT reach them. Break your goals down monthly. If you want to lose 10 pounds, then break that out over the months and track it throughout the year to make sure you’re on target. We call these milestones. Milestones not only help you stay on track with reaching your goals, but achieving the milestones is a confidence and motivation booster that lets you know your hard work is paying off.

One final point on New Year’s resolutions is to remember to not get discouraged. If you fall off track, give yourself some grace and pick back up where you left off. As long as you continue working towards your goals, you’ll make progress.
