Thanksgiving is finally upon us and that means grabbing your annual supply of cranberry sauce, pumpkin puree, and of course the turkey. If there is one thing that we hear every year, it is the existence of tryptophan in every delicious bite of turkey and the inevitable nap that takes place post-Thanksgiving feast. However, with a little bit of research, we have learned that most of what we know about tryptophan is based on a Thanksgiving myth. So, what is L-tryptophan and why is it associated with sleep or relaxation? Here are your top 5 insights and facts about L-tryptophan.
L-Tryptophan is a vital ingredient in our bodies.
L-Tryptophan is an amino acid that exists in our bodies but is not naturally occurring, which means that your body does not produce it. Amino acids are proteins that are the basic building blocks of our cells and hormone production, and since L-Tryptophan is not produced the only way to find your needed source is to consume it in our diet. The main purpose of L-tryptophan is in the development of neurotransmitters and the production of serotonin. In numerous studies, serotonin has been shown to make some species sleepy, so it has been inferred that it can do the same in humans.
Turkey alone will not be enough!
There is a basic misconception that turkey has abnormally high levels of tryptophan. In actuality, it has a good source of the amino acid--.24 grams of L-tryptophan for every 100 grams of turkey -- but an egg has about four times as much tryptophan for the same amount. A recent study at MIT found there is not enough tryptophan in a turkey to produce a large enough spike in serotonin and your post-meal drowsiness is most likely from indulging in a little too much food, which we can all say is perfectly okay for a day like Thanksgiving.
